Orchis stellt Portobello DLP 3D-Drucker auf Kickstarter vor – Update: Canceled

Die Niederländer Wouter Simons und sein Vater Dick Simons stellen den Portobello DLP 3D-Drucker auf Kickstarter vor.

01.September 2014 – Das Familienunternehmen Orchis präsentiert einen DLP 3D-Drucker, der das Resin von oben beleuchtet und nach unten hin das Model Schicht für Schicht aufbaut. Vater und Sohn haben beide schon seit langem mit 2D-Druckern zu tun. Dick Simons, der Vater, war jahrelang als Techniker und Verkäufer für Drucker tätig. Der Sohn kümmert sich um die Software. Er war auch für die Entwicklung von Software für 2D-Drucker verantwortlich.

Der Portobello DLP 3D-Drucker ist ab 3.100€ über Kickstarter verfügbar. Maximal sind über die Kampagne 90 3D-Drucker verfügbar. Diese Begrenzung soll die Lieferung im Dezember 2014 sichern. Ziel der Kampagne ist es zumindest 35.000€ zu sammeln.

26.September 2014 – Update: Kickstarter Kampagne gecanceled

Die Macher des Portobello haben aufgrund der niedrigen Nachfrage die Kampagne gecanceled aber viel aus dem Prozess mitnehmen können. In dem Blog Eintrag von Orchis schreibt Wouter Simons über die neuen Ziele seines Projekts. Die Anfragen zielen auf professionelle Anwendungen, welche die Entwickler in Zukunft erfüllen will.

Recently we tried our hand at our own Kickstarter project. That was a difficult thing to do, a lot of work setting up the project, rewards, etc. Considering the cost benefit of buying 10 of each at once and finding the best price point. And a video…

We did not get funded, but the lessons we learned and the contact we made more than make up for that. We can still sell the printer the old fashioned way, but people now told us the points that we did not manage to get across. The things that we need to explain and show. And we also found out that we have a potentially very good solution for a few very particular problem domains.

The people that come to us with serious interest in our system are professional users that want high quality prints but also know the limitations of other solutions. They can more easily see the difference when you do not have to print through a vat and how much easier it is to print job after job if you can just fill the system and only refill what you use every now and then when the reservoir starts getting low.

In the aftermath of Kickstarter we will continue following up leads, working to integrate with other software solutions, make a standalone module, perhaps create a system with a slightly higher resolution specifically for customers that are willing to surrender a bit of building area for such a solution (and require less resin to fill the printer, which can be a benefit if you choose to work with expensive resins for investment casting for instance).
