Attenborough Dental ist ein Spezialist für Dental Implantate und in mehr als 20 Ländern weltweit tätig.
Auf 3D-Druck kann in dem Bereich schon seit längerem nicht mehr verzichtet werden. Jetzt erkundet Attenborough Dental neue Anwendungsgebiete für 3D-gedruckte Implantate. Die Firma wird Wirbelsäulen Implantate produzieren. Die Scann und 3D-Druck ist bei dem Unternehmen schon vorhanden. Ed Attenborough, ein Director von Attenborough Dental rechnet mit über 24 eingesetzten Implantaten bis Ende nächsten Jahres.
Ed Attenboroug, Managing Director von Attenborough Dental:
The most important part of our proposal is that we have all the facilities needed at our head office. We have a 3D patient scanning centre on site which has an accuracy of up to 20 microns. We also have a 3D printing and manufacturing centre on site, accurate to five to 16 microns working with materials such as titanium and ceramics such as zirconia. We have a very unique set-up here in Nottingham with all the technology needed for the proposal under one roof, which allows us to develop an integrated product and new treatment protocols. Nottingham has one of the largest teaching hospitals in the country at its heart as well as a world-leading academic centre in 3D printing at the University of Nottingham.
Das Projekt wird dabei tatkräftig von der University of Nottingham unterstützt, die schon einige Projekte in dem Bereich 3D-Druck und Medizin betreiben. Die Universität betreibt auch ein eigenes Spital, in welchem die Implantate eingesetzt werden sollten.
Weiters berichtet Attenboroug:
At the moment, nearly all of orthopaedics is generic. Patients are made to fit the artificial implant, via surgery, instead of the implant being made to fit the patient. In many scenarios, the implant will need replacing after several years or a second operation will be necessary. We are proposing to scan the patient in 3D and then produce a custom-made spinal implant for the patient using 3D printing and manufacturing technologies. In the beginning, we are just going to be looking at spinal implants but in theory the process could be expanded to knees or hips, for example.
