28.10.2012: Als hätten sie die Forderungen von Big Innovation Centre erhört, kündigte das Technology Strategy Board (TSB) der britischen Regierung diese Woche ein Investment von £7 Millionen in Forschung und Entwicklung an 3D-Drucktechnologien an.
Konkret soll am 3.12.12 ein offener Wettbewerb mit dem Namen “Inspiring New Design Freedoms in Additive Manufacturing” gestartet werden der von dem Technology Strategy Board, dem Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council, dem Arts and Humanities Research Council und dem Economic and Social Research Council geleitet wird.
“3D printing technologies offer huge potential for UK businesses to compete successfully by embracing radically different manufacturing techniques that could be applied across a wide variety of global market sectors, from aerospace to jewellery (…) We believe this new investment will help UK companies make the step change necessary to reach new markets and gain competitive advantage. Building on £20 million of previous Technology Strategy Board support for additive manufacturing innovation, it will help secure more of this game-changing high value activity for the UK, driving economic growth and enhancing quality of life.” so der Wissenschaftsminister David Willetts am Montag.
Ob dies vielleicht schon ein erster Schritt aufgrund des neuen EU Fokus auf 3D-Druck ist, darf gespannt verfolgt werden.

Update: 09.12.2012 – Wettbewerb soll Schwachstellen von 3D-Druck beseitigen
Robert Wilson vom TSB möchte mit dem Wettbewerb “the dirty secrets of additive manufacturing” ans Licht holen. Konkret möchte er die Schwachstellen der Britischen Additive Manufacturing Industrie gegenüber der Amerikanischen und Deutschen lösen.
Als bereits erkannte Schwachstellen nannte er:
The reasons for slow adoption include high cost, inconsistent material properties, lack of applicable industry standards, unexpected pre-and post-processing requirements and the failure to exploit the new design freedoms offered.
Der Wettbewerb hat am 3.12.2012 gestartet und läuft bis zum 27.03.2013. Die geplanten Investitionen sollen zwischen 50k und £750k liegen.

Update: 07.06.2013 – UK Regierung investiert weitere £14,7 Millionen in 3D-Druck Projekte.
Wie der Telegraph berichtet, investiert die UK Regierung weitere £14,7 Millionen in Additive Manufacturing. Konkret werden £8,4 Millionen vom “Technology Strategy Board” sowie von “Research Councils” und weitere £6,3 Millionen von privaten Investoren in Projekte wie “health care” und “energy” investiert. Die damit finanzierten Projekte sollen 1-3 Jahre laufen und Jobs sowie ökonomischen Wachstum ins Land bringen.

Update: 16.01.2014 – England investiert weitere £15 Millionen in 3D Druck für den Automotiv und Luftfahrt Sektor
Der Englische Finanzminister George Osborne kündigte heute eine weitere Investition in Höhe von £15 Millionen zur Errichtung eines “National Centre for 3D printing technology”. Das aus öffentlicher Hand finanzierte Center soll 2015 eröffnen und den Aerospace und Automotiv Sektor stärken und auch medizinische Produkte entwickeln. Die Investition ist Teil des “whitehall funding” das den Aerospace Sektor bereits mit £60 Millionen unterstützt.
“We are already the best in Europe for aerospace and I want to do even better. Up to 27,000 new planes are needed between now and 2030, worth billions of pounds to the UK economy in contracts. That is why I am announcing today that, together with industry, we will invest around £60 million in a dedicated facility for aerospace manufacturing as part of £2 billion of support for this growing sector.”
