Student druckt seine eigene Handprothese
Jordan Nickerson, Informatikstudent am Portland Community College, wurde ohne seine linke Hand geboren und hat den Großteil seines Lebens ohne Prothese verbracht. Grund dafür war nicht nur der Kostenfaktor, sondern auch das nicht individuell angepasste Universaldesign.
Jetzt hat der 23-jährige seine eigene Handprothese designed und mithilfe von 3D-Druckern im MakerSpace des Colleges ausgedruckt. Ausgangsmaterialen waren Karbonfaser-Kunststoff, ABS und PLA; ein Klettverschluss, Klebeband und ein Mousepad vervollständigten das Design mit Materialkosten von rund $ 40.
Nickerson will das Design seiner Handprothese mit beweglichen Fingern noch verbessern und danach als Alternative zu kostspieligen Prothesen verkaufen.
“I have always had a fascination with prosthetics, for obvious reasons since I don’t have a hand,” Nickerson said. “It’s connected by two hinges and I put my arm in the socket and I flex my wrist and the fingers close. All five fingers close at once to make a fist, but with a little bit of tensioning you can make it where the thumb and the index finger touch first so if you wanted to pick up something small, you can.”
