3D gedruckter Schaumstoff besser als natürlicher Schaumstoff?

Forscher des Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) haben 3D Druck und Schaumstoff unter die Lupe genommen.

Das Forscherteam hat herausgefunden, dass additiv gefertigte Schaumstoffe länger halten und bessere mechanische Eigenschaften besitzen als natürliche Schaumstoffe, wie Schwämme und Schäume.

Schaumstoffe kommen in vielen natürlichen Materialien vor. Diese bestehen of aus einer eher chaotischen Struktur. Eine geordnete 3D gedruckte Struktur bietet laut den Forschern jedoch bessere Eigenschaften.

“3D printing of foams offers tremendous flexibility in creating programmable architectures, customizable shapes and tunable mechanical response,” said lead author Amitesh Maiti. “Now that our work strongly indicates superior long-term stability and performance of the printed material, there is no reason not to consider replacing traditional foam with appropriately designed 3D printed foam in specific future applications.”
